Chassis Numbers

The Chassis number is how we identify our cars, it’s also known as the serial number or VIN. The easiest place to find it is on the plaque atop your steering column. You can also find it in your engine bay stamped in the frame on the right side. For US spec cars, there’s also a plaque in the drivers door jamb that shows your chassis number and month/year of manufacture.

Our cars will also have an engine number and transmission number. The engine number can be found stamped on top of engine block near the first cylinder, you might need to remove your air filter housing to see it. And the transmission number is a little harder to view, but it can be found on the transmission housing.

There’s also a body (or build) number. This was an internal build order number which has no real correlation to the chassis number (unless you happen to have access to factory records that specify which build number ended up with which car). The build number can be found in multiple places on the car, just about every body panel and interior piece are marked. Some are stamped, some are handwritten, and you may often need to remove some things in order to see the number in some places. The easiest place to find your build number without removing anything is on the back of the headlight brackets (assuming they haven’t been replaced), otherwise look in the engine bay on the left side stamped into metal bar to which the coils attach. If all build numbers match, it simply means these are all the original panels and parts your car had installed when built. If they don’t match, then those panels or parts have likely been replaced.

The icons at the top of this page will take you to a table of chassis numbers manufactured for that year. Each table consists of model designation (208 or 308), manufacture date, original exterior and interior colors, importer/dealer, and (if known) current exterior and interior colors, body, engine, and transmission numbers. If there is a photo available of the car, you’ll see pic next to the chassis number (you can click on that and see the car). You can sort the table however you like and the default view will display 25 cars per page. You can change that to 50, 75, 100, or all. You can also download the table you’re viewing as an Excel or CVS file. For quick and easy identification, 208 GT4 cars will be in blue text across the table, and special models like the 308 GT4/LM, Michelotto, and 308GT Rainbow will be displayed in purple text.

If you see any information on the tables that might be incorrect, outdated, or missing, please contact me with that information and I will update the database. If you believe the factory data to be incorrect (model designation, manufacture date, original exterior and interior colors, importer/dealer), please provide evidence that proves otherwise. If you have good, clear, hi-res image of any car that does not have a pic, please send those my way as well and I’ll be happy to attach one to the appropriate car.

Please note, out of respect for the privacy of owners, I do not publish personal information in these tables. I do maintain a database with much more information and details on some of the cars current owners, condition, recent sales prices, etc., and you are free to contact me with such information, and it would be much appreciated for historical records, it just won’t be published.

Please enjoy the tables, they’re here for your reference, research, and pleasure.
